Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola paid tribute to his
predecessors on the Bavarian club's bench after he
guided them to their 1,000th Bundesliga win on
Saturday.
A 4-0 victory over Cologne not only extended Bayern's
lead at the top of the table to 10 points, awaiting
Borussia Dortmund's clash with Augsburg on Sunday,
but it extended their perfect start to the season while
reaching an unprecedented milestone.
"One thousand wins -- that's sensational," Guardiola
said on his club's website. "Compliments to the fans,
the players, the former coaches and all the staff at
Bayern Munich who have contributed to this.
"We coaches know how hard it is to win one match, so
winning 1,000 shows how big this club is.
"I'm very proud to be Bayern Munich's coach."
If Bayern captain Philipp Lahm gets his way, Guardiola
will be the proud coach of Bayern next season.
The Catalan's current contract with the Bundesliga
champions is up for renewal in the summer, yet there is
no indication as yet that the former Barcelona coach
intends to extend his stay in Bavaria.
Lahm would like it if he would make up his mind to stay
with Bayern, saying that the whole team is behind him.
"The team's opinion is clear," Lahm told Sport1
television. "We all want to carry on working together
with the boss and we think he's a fantastic coach.
"All I can say is that the team want him to stay here, but
the rest is not up to us."
Cologne counterpart Peter Stoger would perhaps like to
see the back of him, admitting that the Bavarians are
once again in a league of their own this season.
The Goats have managed to match Bayern and cause
them plenty of problems in recent years, but Stoger says
there was a gulf between the two sides on Saturday.
"The best team deservedly won," he said. "I think there
can be no doubting that a huge difference between the
two sides could be seen.
"We tried to make things hard for them and keep the
gaps closed with fair means.
"All I am disappointed about is that we had three or four
counter-attacks in the first half where we lacked any
sort of conviction, but we've got to congratulate Bayern
on their 1,000th win."
